The most famous role she has played is in the role of Tiana the first Disney African American princess, in The Princess and the Frog (2009). In 2011, she was recognized as an Disney Legend. She was also recognized for her performance in Dreamgirls (2006) that was awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture. In the Starz show Power she played LaVerne Jukebox Ganner. Her performance in the theater are also well-known, particularly her roles as Emmie Thbodeaux and as the character in Caroline or Change, a Broadway production of the musical Caroline or Change (2004) which won her an award for the Tony Award Best Featured actress in a Musical. Her nomination was for an award for the Tony Award Best Featured actor in the play Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun.
